3. Follow the instructions for registering your site preference through Mysignup.com. *Note: You may only CHOOSE ONE service site, and you MUST fill in your FULL NAME when you register so that we can get you excused from classes that day!

Gunn Service Day: For several years Youth Community Service has worked along side several non-profit organizations in order to provide an opportunity for Gunn High School Students to engage in community service work throughout the Bay Area. Gunn Students participate in both indoor and outdoor service opportunities that revolve around issues of homelessness, childcare, and environmental restoration among others.

Activity: We will be abating Coyote Brush, a non-native invasive species, in an area where the coyote bush is competing for water and nutrients with recently planted native oaks.

Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District
Location: Los Altos, CA

Activity: The students will be working in the Skyline Ridge Tree Farm Restoration Area-Site B. The site is located above Horseshoe Lake, where disturbed areas hosting a section of a leased Christmas Tree Farm trees was causing added siltation to run into the lake. The site has been cleared of the Christmas Trees, re-graded, replanted, and is in periodic need of follow-up care. The Gunn students will be caring for the restoration area by adding wood chips for mulching and protection measures. A District Ranger will be there to explain this important project and lead the project.

Location: Redwood City, CA

Activity: We need help organizing our warehouse inventory and tasks include sorting, counting, boxing up, and moving paint and other construction materials. Appropriate dress is important; we want you to be safe and comfortable (e.g. long pants, closed-toe shoes). Please DO NOT wear sandals. We suggest dressing in layers as it can get cold in the warehouse, but it can easily get warm after working for a while. Avoid dangling jewelry. Also, please wear clothing you don’t mind getting dirty.

Activity: The students will participate in Half Moon Bay State Beach’s Habitat Restoration Project, which consists of removing non-native invasive plants, using shovels or hoes. All gloves and shoes will be provided. All participants must wear long pants, closed toed shoes, and warm layers.

Activity: Build four garden beds and compost bins in our horticulture therapy garden at our facility. Simple construction of boxes that will require use of drill, hammers, and shovels.
Agency will provide oversight, design and materials as well as one supervisior. We will require additional adult supervisors provided by you-ideally adult(s) with experience/knowledge of simple garden projects.

Activity: Students will help in the donation department, where we intake all of our food donations, sort them and put them out in our Welcome Home Shoppe, where clients can come and shop free of charge. This is a warehouse setting so we advise all volunteers to dress warm and wear comfortable shoes. Since the group will be here from 9am- 1pm, we will have them sorting and organizing donations in the warehouse.

Activity: Planting and/or caring for native CA Oaks. Our work depends on weather. Conditions between now and the public service day influence what we do. We can not guarantee any particular activity, but we will provide students opportunity to work outside planting and caring for trees and understory species.

RAFT – Resource Area For Teachers

Activity: RAFT is a local non profit that promotes hands on learning and teaching. They provide a variety of very low cost materials and resources to educators and others who work with youth pre K to 12th grade. They also work hard to create opportunities for educators to gain professional growth. Student volunteers will help prepare used, new and donated materials for teachers to use in their classrooms. Through your volunteer hours you'll help support teachers in engaging their sudents in fun, hands-on learning!

Activity: Elkus Ranch is a working educational ranch that does programming with schools and community groups. Elkus is committed to teaching the importance of sustainability and protecting our environment through green methods of living. A visit to Elkus allows students the chance to take a step back in time and see how farmers and ranchers lived in early California. Students will have the opportunity to clean animal pens; weed, plant and sow in the garden; do trail maintenance or paint structures at the ranch.

CANOPY

Waiver form: Form will be given at the site, the day of Gunn Service Day. There is no need to print and sign a Canopy waiver form beforehand - however, you do need to have a PAUSD waiver.
Activity: Canopy is a Palo Alto Based non-profit advocate for the urban forest and works to educate, inspire and engage the community as stewards of young and mature trees. Students will be working outside, supporting the growth of trees in East Palo Alto along Bayshore Road. Volunteers may help by mulching, which includes loading, transporting and spreading mulch with rakes. Gloves will be provided. Pants, sturdy shoes and long sleeved shirts are a good idea for this site.

Activity: American Red Cross is preparing for their annual free CPR Saturday
training event for the public on March 8 at Cubberley Community Center.

Activity: At the Ravenswood Open Space Preserve in the Palo Alto Baylands, students will paint and restore the two observation decks used for viewing shorebirds. Snacks and drinks will be provided. District Rangers will lead the project and provide an orientation to the open space land preservation.

Activity: Volunteers will be working on Ecosystem Restoration on the bike path between Gunn and Bol Park. This will entail restoring native plant populations through weeding invasive non-native plant species, an important piece in maintaining a healthy, sustainable environment. Tools, gloves, and snacks will be provided.

HALF MOON BAY STATE BEACH
Location: Half Moon Bay, CA

Activity: Students will be participating in the habitat restoration program which will primarily focus on non-native plant removal. Students will be expected to perform tasks that are somewhat physically demanding, including standing for two hours, frequent bending at the knees and waist, and carrying loads of up to 20lbs. You may get dirty, so wear appropriate clothing. Long pants and long sleeves are suggested, and closed toed shoes are required. A hat and sunscreen, refillable water bottle and layered clothing are recommend. If rain is in the forecast, bring rain gear. Gloves and necessary gardening equipment, such as shovels and hoes will be provided. Come out to the beach and support the environment!

Activity: Feed the hungry...Clothe the needy...Welcome the stranger. Volunteers will greet donors, help unload cars, hand out tax receipts and sort through donations so that we can give our customers the best quality of clothing possible. Customers come in to receive grocery boxes, so we are accepting donations, packing boxes based on family size and sorting through all produce and every food item so that our customers can prepare healthy, balanced meals. We expect staff, volunteers and customers to be treated with dignity, compassion and respect.
