California STEM Service-Learning Initiative
What is the California STEM Service-Learning Initiative?
The California STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) Service-Learning Initiative supports middle and high school students in working together with their classroom teachers, nonprofit and for-profit organizations, and higher education to meet community needs through a STEM-engaged project.
STEM Service-Learning students learn STEM related academic content and explore STEM related educational and career opportunities. The state wide effort is lead by staff from the Yolo County Office of Education, Curriculum and Instructional Services Department and the California Department of Education, CalServe Initiative. The Region Five (Monterey to San Mateo County) effort is lead by Youth Community Service in Palo Alto, CA.
The CalServe STEM Service-Learning Region Five Consortium consists of educators, non-profit organizations, and industry partners who are working with and guiding youth in STEM projects that meet community needs.
What are the STEM Service-Learning Teams?
A STEM Service-Learning team has one adult leader who mentors a group of students working together on the same project. For example, one team could be one classroom and one teacher working with an adult leader from a nonprofit organization. A team could also be a middle or high school club and a sponsoring teacher working with a higher education faculty.
Is training available for STEM team leaders?
STEM and Service-Learning trainings will be held throughout the year.
In addition, there will be three scheduled quarterly consortium meetings (late afternoon, early evening) for all.
