Service Learning at Youth Community Service
Educators
YCS has been identified by the California Department of Education as a Service Learning Regional Lead. We offer support to teachers who are working to use service as a teaching tool to bring the real world into their classroom and make their curriculum relevant. YCS provides training and technical assistance to teachers at elementary, middle, and high schools in the Mid-Peninsula, South Bay, Santa Cruz and Monterey regions.
Regional Service Learning Advisory Consortium (RSLAC)
The Regional Service Learning Consortium is a regional network of service-learning partnerships in Region 5 - a geographic area that includes the counties of San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey. Each county has a partnership of leaders from K-12, higher education, and community-based sectors, who lead various service-learning activities in that county. Representatives from each county partnership convene periodically to network, share ideas, and plan cross-regionally. To learn more, email judy@youthcommunityservice.org
Service Learning Mailing List
The Service-Learning Director maintains an email database of teachers and community agencies who are interested in sharing and receiving information about service-learning opportunities, events, and resources (including grants and curriculum materials.) This is not a listserve – all messages go through the Service Learning Director, and only valuable and pertinent information are passed on to the list. To join the list, email judy@youthcommunityservice.org
Service Learning Library
YCS has a small but comprehensive service learning library which includes (among other things) how-to guides, service-learning curriculum by issue area and subject matter, children’s literature, videos, service learning research, and community contact directories.
Partnership Building
YCS maintains regular contact with many community agencies throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. We can help teachers and students reach the appropriate agency for almost any service project. Furthermore, we can guide them towards agencies that have a history of working successfully with youth volunteers.
