Welcome to Gunn Service Day 2011 Registration for Gunn High School Students Deadline March 1, 2011 at midnight, sharp!
Please follow this procedure:
1. Read the descriptions below for each service site.
2. Choose your preference for service site and click on the Registration hyperlink Mysignup.com at the bottom of this webpage.
3. Follow the instructions for registering your site preference through Mysignup.com. *Note: You may only CHOOSE ONE service site, and you MUST fill in your FULL NAME when you register so that we can get you excused from classes that day!
4. Download the permission/waiver forms; one form for your preferred site (if required) and one form for YCS and the Palo Alto Unified School District. Bring a signed copy of each of these forms to Gunn Service Day. You will need to submit a signed copy of each form to participate in GSD.
5. Have a great time at GSD!
SERVICE SITE DESCRIPTIONS
Service site: Half Moon Bay Restore
Mission: To provide for the health, inspiration and education of the people of California by helping to preserve the state's extraordinary biological diversity, protecting its most valued natural and cultural resources, and creating opportunities for high-quality outdoor recreation.

Project Description: The students will participate in Half Moon Bay State Beach’s Habitat Restoration Project which consists of removing non-native invasive plants, using hand tools, in order to protect and support the native plants and wildlife which live in the area. All gloves and tools will be provided. All participants must wear long pants, closed toed shoes, and warm layers.

Service site: Lytton Gardens
Mission: To provide quality senior communities, encompassing housing, assisted living, and social and health care services. We enable seniors with different needs and abilities to age with dignity, regardless of their means.

Project Description: Because we normally have scheduled morning activities for our residents, we’ve created a service activity that the students will help us with. We’ve been collecting travel size toilette items to be sorted and bagged in decorative paper sacks that will donated to a local homeless shelter, In Vision. After students would help staff with a cooking project and join the residents in our “Make a lunch” special lunch. We would like volunteers here 10:30am- 1:00pm. Our residents have lunch at 12:00pm. We would like the students to join us for a special lunch, 12- 1pm

Service site: Magic Inc
Mission: Magic is people learning and communicating how humans can further common good by practicing valuescience—scientific methods and principles applied to questions of value.

Service site: Creative Montessori
Mission: Creative Montessori Learning Center (CMLC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community agency where we celebrate diversity. CMLC welcomes children age 2-6 from all backgrounds to work, play, and learn together.

Service site: Milpitas Food Pantry
Mission: We are an emergency food box program that distributes food to low, very low and no income residents of Milpitas and Alviso. We are part of the Second Harvest Food Bank network and we follow their eligibility guidelines as well as those of the city of Milpitas.

Service site: Midpeninsula Regional Open Space
Mission: The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District's purpose is to purchase, permanently protect, and restore lands forming a regional open space greenbelt, preserve unspoiled wilderness, wildlife habitat, watershed, viewshed, and fragile ecosystems, and provide opportunities for low-intensity recreation and environmental education

Service site: Raft
Mission:
RAFT is a non-profit organization that provides educators with the tools they need to engage their students in powerful hands-on learning experiences. We offer a selection of innovative hands-on activities, educational resources and inexpensive supplies (many donated by local businesses) to enrich pre K-12 education and community programs.

Mission: EHP provides food, clothing, household essentials, support and referral services to those in need.

Project Description: Remove soil from one raised garden bed and replace the soil with new soil. Job will require students to work with shovels and wheel barrows.

Project Description: Volunteers may do any of a variety of habitat restoration projects such as weeding invasive species, planting native plants, mulching, building brush piles, etc. Please have volunteers wear sturdy clothes–they may get dirty or damaged. Long pants, closed–toe shoes such as sneakers or boots, and layered clothing are recommended. Weather can change rapidly–be prepared for heat, sun, cold, and rain! They should also bring a water bottle, sunscreen, a hat and a raincoat.
