POSITION: YCS Summer of Service Team Leader TIME COMMITMENT: 40 hours per week SALARY: $11 to 15/ hour DOE STARTING DATE: Monday, June 11, 2012 ENDING DATE: Friday, August 3, 2012
Summer of Service Overview:
Middle school students and high school freshman develop leadership skills, teamwork, and new friends in a fun, dynamic day camp. We empower students from Palo Alto and East Palo Alto to examine and address social issues through service learning. Team leaders are counselors and mentors for three 2-week sessions and one 1-week session of service and fun. Join our dedicated, fun-loving staff and make a difference this summer!
Specific Responsibilities of the Team Leader: 1. Lead one SOS team of 7-8 middle/high school students. •Supervise students during service projects •Implement YCS curriculum to teach 1 hour lessons on various social issues •Facilitate reflection activities •Ensure safety of all participants
2. Assist with large group Summer of Service activities •Organize and lead team building activities and group games •Supervise students on Fun Friday field trips •Help facilitate morning and afternoon assemblies
3. Attend one-week staff training and participate in weekly staff meetings during the program
Qualifications: •Enjoy working with diverse groups of students in a multicultural environment •Experience working with middle school students •Flexible and positive in an intense, dynamic, and sometimes stressful environment •Passionate commitment to community service, service learning, and social justice. •Able to work independently and as a team member •Must exercise excellent judgment, diplomacy, and sensitivity to all constituents •Must be current college student or graduate •Available to work 40 hours per week •Valid California driver's license and driving record that meets the requirements of the City of Palo Alto. •Ability to speak Spanish a plus

YCS Freshmen Leadership Corps Overview: High School freshman in East Palo Alto who will attend Carlmont High School have the opportunity to enroll in a summer transition program that promotes leadership, diversity, and the ability to examine and address social issues through service-learning. We use service-learning strategies to examine and address social issues and to build student awareness about their community and their own capacity to make a difference, as they participate with community agencies in the areas of education, health, crime prevention, jobs, emergency preparedness and the environment. Team leaders serve as counselors and mentors for three sessions of service and fun. Join our committed and energetic staff and make a difference this summer!

1. Lead one FLC team of 5 freshmen and 3 high school mentors - Supervise students during service projects - Implement YCS curriculum to lead one-hour learning experiences on various social issues - Facilitate reflection activities - Ensure safety of all participants
2. Assist with large group Freshmen Leadership Corps activities - Organize and lead team-building activities and group games - Supervise students on Fun Friday field trips - Help facilitate morning and afternoon assemblies
3. Attend one-week staff training and participate in weekly staff meetings during the program - Learn and apply service-learning strategies to build learning during service and leadership development activities - Receive training and utilize proactive methods of positive behavior reinforcement, conflict resolution, diversity appreciation and ongoing dialogs about the definitions and responsibilities of community - Support program documentation and evaluation steps that include surveys and focus groups during each session
Qualifications:
- Enjoy working with diverse youth in a multi-cultural environment - Experience working with high school students and ability to build rapport with students in East Palo Alto/Belle Haven community - Flexible and positive in an intense, dynamic, and sometimes stressful environment - Passionate commitment to community service, service-learning, social justice and youth development - Able to work independently and as a team member - Must exercise excellent judgment, diplomacy, and sensitivity to all constituents - Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds - Must be a current college student or graduate - Available to work an average of 36 to 40 hours per week - Valid CA driver’s license and must have clean driving record - Knowledge of East Palo Alto and Mid-peninsula area preferred - People with bilingual (Spanish) skills are strongly encouraged to apply
